About Catherine

Meet Catherine Marie Gilbert, a Vancouver Island author, historian and lecturer whose passion for history, nature and people has resulted in fascinating stories.

A born adventurer, Catherine has travelled widely and enjoys exploring the far reaches of the Vancouver Island region with others as she imparts its unique history. This curiosity combined with her work experience and academic training, has created a specialized knowledge that she loves to share. Catherine initially earned her Honours BA at York University in History and French, then a Masters in History from the University of Victoria in 2018. She taught Canadian history from 2019 – 2024.

In 2012, while working at the Museum at Campbell River, she published her first book, and a second followed inspired by her experiences at Strathcona Park Lodge and Outdoor Education Centre in 2021. Catherine has added a third title to her two previous, well-received history books: Walrus, the Remarkable Life of Eco-Warrior David Garrick published by Ronsdale Press in April, 2026.

Catherine’s articles and photographs have appeared in numerous publications such as the BC Historical Federation Journal, the Western Mariner Magazine, Compass Magazine, The Strathcona Collective  and the Georgia Straight.

When not at her computer or drinking tea, Catherine loves to swim in the ocean and go fishing and hiking. She has lived in the Vancouver Island region for over 25 years including Quadra Island and beautiful Alert Bay on Cormorant Island. Catherine recently worked at the Alert Bay Library & Museum where completed cataloguing the multitude of journals and papers in the David Garrick collection. Over the past seven years, Catherine has traveled  as a history guide for Wells Gray Tours to the west coast (Nootka Sound) on board the Uchuck III and to Strathcona Provincial Park.
